So sad
** spoiler alert ** 2,5 stars. Oh, how I was disappointed by this book. The Prom is actually an amazing story told as a musical and as a movie. The main characters Emma and Alyssa are a couple, but only Emma is out. In their town being part of the LGBTQ community is not done. When Emma is denied her prom, an inclusive prom, Broadway stars come to the rescue. In the musical and the movie there are four of them: Angie, Trent, Barry and DeeDee. In the book only DeeDee and Barry appear, which TBH angered me a lot. The book was butchered, like seriously. Trent and Angie are very important to the story as they are the characters who help Emma find het zazz and teach the kids in school that being part of the LGBTQ community is okay and that they seriously need to educate themselves. But no, this was done by Barry and DeeDee in the book, but not as huge as they did this is the musical and movie. That was one point that made me sad.
The second thing is that the songs are minimalistic in the book, which of course I understand, but to cut them completely is just not done. I expected them to be woven into the story, but this was done with like one sentence per song. Except for the last one, BUT IT WASNT THE SONG THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN USED. The writer replaced Unruly Heart (amazing) with I Just Wanna Dance With You (which js supposed to be a private song between Emma and Alyssa, but no). Excuse you, but just don’t change the most epic song.
And the third was the stereotypical behavior of Barry. He is gay, but portrayed as an offensive stereotype. I disliked that a lot.
And the stereotypical things in general in this book are just well really really bad. For a f/f romance book, this had A LOT of homophobic comments. Things like ‘She turned gay’ and the whole description of Emma being thrown out that was just completely told as if it was no big deal, are just shameful.
The grandma however made up for a lot of it, what an amazing, powerful and supportive woman!
Despite all these things, I semi-liked the storyline, which the 2,5 stars are for.
So sad that this was butchered to this piece of shit.
