Friendships, I stan

Manon Visser 30 april 2021 Auteur
3,8 stars for Kate in Waiting! I know, this seems a bit nitpicky, but I'll explain why in this review.

Although I absolutely adore Becky Albertalli, I expected a bit more from this book. Overall it was amusing and it had the great humour we expect from Becky, but the storyline was a bit flat. A straight girl and gay boy who are best friends and fall for the same guy could have a lot of potential, but in my opinion this book didn't live up to that full potential. It was mostly Kate developing a bit of an superficial crush (he's hot, so?) and Andy falling in love for real (this is speculating, because you don't read from Andy's point of view). Obviously they had to choose between their friendship and the guy and the wanted to fight for their friendship, but instead they just didn't really communicate at all. And that's what's my problem with this. It fell flat in the middle because of the lack of communication. Besides this, I was really starting to get irritated by the overuse of the word fuckboy or f-boy. That was so stereotypical and unnecessary.

So that's what bugged me and why my rating is 3,8 stars. Now the things I did like. The focus on friendship was so so so cute and I just love that. More books should focus on the friendship! Also the theatre parts were amazingly written and wholesome. I also loved the rep of LGBTQ+ characters! But the best character in this ENTIRE book was Noah, he is so adorable and genuinely kind. I loved that. And of course the impecible humor of Becky made me laugh so hard. So in the end I had a fun time reading this book. Can't wait to see what else Becky has up her sleeve.
