Eclipse

When I first read this book, about 14 years ago, this was my least favourite part of the Twilight-series. I still agree with younger me, because I was annoyed for most parts of this book…

Don’t get me wrong: I LOVE Twilight and the nostalgia is real, but something about this book bothered me a lot.

Firstly, the book is too long. My edition has over 600 pages and even though I got through it in two days, I often felt that I was reading ‘space to fill’ instead of actual plot. It’s not until about page 100 that the first hint of the newborns is implemented in the story, and that’s basically the main theme of this book. I enjoy reading about Bella’s interactions with the others and her thoughts on different topics, but the book could easily have been 100 pages shorter and still contain the same plot.

Then, what in the toxicity is Edward’s behaviour in this book?? If I were Bella, I definitely would have ended things with him when he had Alice kidnap her to ensure that she wouldn’t see her bestfriend. I understand the whole topic of protection, but this is not okay. This behaviour really was toxic. If I were treated like this in real life, I would feel as if I were in an abusive and controlling relationship. It’s not romance anymore in this book, it’s possession.

Okay rant over! Luckily, I did very much enjoy the Jacob-Bella parts of this book. The friendship that exists between them, especially coming from Jacob, is so beautiful to see and it shows that you don’t always have to see each other or talk every day to stay friends. You simply need to care for and trust each other, which is definitely the case here.

The ending of the book, I really loved! The tension between the vampires and werewolves is still there, but Meyer managed to balance this perfectly with hate for a mutual enemy. I really loved the tension of the fight, which made me fly through the last few chapters of the book. I would’ve loved, however, to read a bit more about the actual fight between the newborn army and the Cullens and werewolves.

So mixed feelings about this one, but still had a good time and will definitely continue my reread of the series!
