Summary:
The adventure goes on… Aria, Hannah, Spencer and Emily continue to be confused. If Ali is dead and A is unmasked, then who is sending them all these messages? When does it stop, how does it keep happening and how does the new A find their information? While trying to get these answers, the girls, obviously need to continue life. They all seem to have found a new love and great hobbies, but the idea of A in the background makes them very paranoid. Will they be able to unmask this A? And will they be able to convince the police of their new discovery? The odds don’t seem to be in their favour for this one…
Writing style & form:
To be fair, the writing style of this book wasn’t as smooth as the first few parts of this series. It took me a while to really dive into the story and even then, I couldn’t read as fast as I normally do and it didn’t interest me as much as the other parts. I enjoyed the story, but I really hope that this was just a one time thing.
I continue to really like the form! It’s very interesting to see the different points of view of the girls and how they all feel about the same (and of course different) events. The lay-out is not very special, but simple. I think that’s a good thing, since the plot is very complex already, so they balance each other out nicely.
Plot:
The plot of this novel was very enjoyable, but the events do not really stand out much anymore. The series is just a nice, easy and distracting read, but after a while, the events are just not that striking anymore.
The characters, however, are becoming increasingly more interesting. As the series progress, we get to know more and more of each character and their distinguishing features, which makes the story more interesting. Each of the girls goes through a personal development in the novel: new love (and all the struggles that go along with it), personal struggles at home, but also a positive development on the aspect of friendship.
I want to focus on one character specifically with her personal development: Emily. I really liked how her internal conflict was described with regards to her sexuality. On the outside, you don’t see much of this conflict, but through her point of view, we as readers get to know more about how she’s feeling and the questions she has. I also think that this is a highly relevant topic in modern day society, so I think this could be a good example for someone struggling with the same or a similar conflict to see that they are not alone in this.
Conclusion:
I think the book was very enjoyable, but not very special. I had a lot of fun while reading, but the events just didn’t really stand out to me, it was just ‘one of those plots’. What I did really like was the personal developments of the characters, the conflicts they dealt with and the positive breakthroughs they had. I would say it’s a nice and fun read if you just want some distraction, but if you’re looking for a very special book, I think you might have to look further.
