Feeling nostalgic, but actually having fun

2025 reread review

So, I think I read this book in 2012 or something? Maybe a year earlier, maybe a year later. I was around 11 at the time and it was the first time reading a YA book as opposed to children's fiction. One of my friends was a big fan and we watched all the films together and then, I borrowed all the books from my mom and read them in about a week or two. Twilight really was my life and contained a special place in my heart ever since.

When my bookclub chose to read this book back in February, I was very very happy. I had tried to reread this book in one of the first months of the pandemic, in 2020, and for some reason I couldn't read it. I was a bit scared before starting it this time that I wouldn't be able to finish it and that the magical spark and joy of my childhood had disappeared. Luckily, it did not and I'm definitely planning on reading the rest of the series ASAP!

Even though this book is over 500 pages, I really flew through! Of course, I know the plotline and that definitely helps with fast reading, but the book was also written very nicely. Short sentences, funny expressions and not too difficult use of language. I really felt as if this book was written with the aim of having people relax. And I really did.

Then, the atmosphere. I watched and rewatched the films many times, also in the last few years. The thing is: they're really awkward. I love them, because they're nostalgic, but they're definitly awkward above anything else. In my memory, the books were too. But they're not. There's not a single scene in which I felt as uncomfortable as watching the films. Bella is kinda cool and everything just feels very relaxed - or adventurous.

The plot is way cooler than the filmplot as well. As I said, there's not much awkwardness in the book and the plot feels very detailed as well. Everything is structured very well, the chronology is correct, the characters and their lives feel very realistic - except for the fact that this is an urban fantasy with mythical creatures, of course. The fantastical elements are also woven into reality very nicely, which doesn't make the plot feel out of place or forced in any way. It just all kind of makes sense. I really understand why I loved this so much when I was younger.

Final note: Team Jacob forever, but I do think Edward is very compassionate in the books.

I can't wait to start the second book!
