Ents, Phoenixes and excitement!
I love Mael and I love Ents, so this book made me so happy. It somehow does feel a little slower than the first book and maybe even a little more confusing. This could be because The Second Premonition has a lot of characters and backstabbing. I feel like the story might be better with fewer people in it, like if D’Maeo and Mael were the same person and if Paul and Simon were the same person.
I really like the phoenix twist, by the way, an interpretation I haven’t seen before. I also really liked the fact that Dante took his mom to the bird park. That was so wholesome. And the tickling scene was so weird and random, and it made me smile (I can’t be more specific, because spoilers). This book walks the fine line between bringing me down with Mael getting sick and making me happy with the stuff I just described. The ending was freaking nerve-wracking, and I enjoyed diving into Vicky’s story. I hope we get to know more soon!
Let’s talk a little about diversity. There is some variation in cultural background, but not a lot. This personally doesn’t bother me that much, and I love the fact that the author put in the effort to have at least some diversity. On the other hand: I kind of liked Myah and Jeep together, while not actually craving another heterosexual relationship in the story. So am sad and glad at the same time. I’m looking forward to seeing some non-heterosexual feelings somewhere, though. Fingers crossed.
One last note: what the hell happened with the Taylar stuff from the first book? With the picture under his bed? Why is it not mentioned at all? (tiny spoiler: I’ve already read half of the next book, where you can find a very satisfying and unsettling explanation).
